Navigating change - even when the change is something you chose

Not all difficult periods start with something going wrong. Sometimes the hardest thing is a change you wanted - a new job, a move, becoming a parent, retiring, leaving a relationship that wasn’t working. Even positive transitions can leave you feeling unmoored, uncertain, or not quite yourself.

Other transitions are imposed: redundancy, illness, children leaving home, age related changes like perimenopause, a shift in identity or role that you didn’t see coming. These can challenge your sense of who you are and what your life is for.

Why it helps to talk

During periods of change, it’s common to feel as though everyone else is coping and you’re the only one struggling. Counselling gives you a space to be honest about that. Your counsellor can help you explore what the transition means to you, what you’re gaining and what you’re losing, and how to find your footing in unfamiliar territory.

It’s not about someone telling you what to do. It’s about having a reliable space to think things through while the ground is shifting.

Common transitions people bring to counselling

Career changes or redundancy. Becoming a parent. Relationship changes. Life transitions - moving in together, separating, divorce. Retirement. Relocation. Peri-menopause. Coming to terms with a health diagnosis. Children leaving home. Adjusting to a new role or identity. Starting or returning to education.
