Frequently asked questions
Is counselling at Physis Affordable Counselling confidential?
Yes. What you discuss in your sessions is confidential. Your counsellor will explain the limits of confidentiality at your first session - these are standard across the profession and relate to situations involving serious risk of harm. Your counsellor also discusses their work in clinical supervision, but this is confidential.
Are your counsellors fully qualified?
Our practitioners are endorsed to work therapeutically with clients and are completing supervised practice placements as part of their advanced training with Physis Scotland.
What’s the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?
In practice, the terms overlap significantly. Both involve talking with a trained professional about what’s going on in your life, your feelings, and your patterns of behaviour. Our practitioners may use either term depending on their training modality.
Do I need a referral from my GP?
No. You can contact us directly. If you’re currently receiving treatment from your GP or another service, we’d encourage you to let them know you’re starting counselling, but it isn’t a requirement.
What if I need to cancel a session?
We ask for at least 48 hours’ notice if you need to cancel. Late cancellations or missed sessions may still be charged, as your counsellor holds that time exclusively for you.
Can I choose my counsellor?
We’ll match you with a practitioner based on your needs and their availability. If, after your first session, you feel the fit isn’t right, we’re happy to discuss alternatives.
Is the building accessible?
We’re located in Edinburgh’s West End, a short walk from Haymarket station. We are located in a period property with external steps down to our basement counselling rooms and up to the main front door entrance, and unfortunately are not wheelchair accessible.On-street parking is available on Drumsheugh Gardens (£8 per hour) and surrounding streets. Parking is also available in public car parks.
I’m not sure if counselling is right for me.
That’s fine. You’re welcome to get in touch and have a conversation before committing to anything. Sometimes the best way to find out is simply to try a first session.
