Fees and how it works

Get in touch

Contact us by phone or through the contact form.

Our Practice Manager will arrange a short telephone conversation to find out a little about what you’re looking for and to make sure the service is a good fit. If we're not the right option for your needs, we’ll help point you in the right direction.

How it works illustration

What is the process for starting counselling?

Your first session

Your first session is a chance to meet your counsellor face to face. You’ll have time to talk about what's brought you to counselling, what you’d like help with, and how the sessions work. It’s also an opportunity to ask any questions and see whether it feels right for you.

Booking your sessions

If you decide you’d like to continue, your counsellor will book your first six weekly sessions with you.

How much does it cost?

Sessions at Physis Affordable Counselling are offered at a fixed fee of £30 per session. This is significantly lower than typical private therapy rates in Edinburgh, and is made possible by our partnership model with Physis Scotland.

We ask that fees are paid in advance of the session. We’re unable to offer sliding-scale or free sessions at this time, but our fixed fee is designed to be as accessible as possible.

What happens at a first session?

Your first session is a chance for you and your counsellor to meet, talk about what’s brought you to counselling, and see whether it feels like a good fit. There’s no obligation to continue after the first session.

Your counsellor will explain how the sessions work, cover confidentiality, and answer any questions you have. It’s completely normal to feel nervous - most people do.

How long are sessions?

Each session lasts 50 minutes. Sessions are held at a time that suits you, which you and your counsellor will agree together.

How many sessions will I need?

That depends on you. Some people find that a short block of sessions - six to twelve - gives them what they need. Others choose to continue for longer. If after the initial appointment you decide to go ahead, we ask that you commit to 6 sessions. Further blocks of 6 sessions can be booked if you decide to continue. You and your counsellor will review how things are going as you progress.

How do I book?

Get in touch through our contact page. Our practice manager will be in touch to arrange a brief initial conversation to understand what you’re looking for, and match you with a suitable therapist. We will be in touch within two working days. We aim to offer a first appointment within five working days.
